Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (Green Bottle Blue)
Commonly known as the GBB, this species is frequently cited as the “perfect” tarantula. Native to the arid Paraguaná Peninsula of Venezuela, it combines every trait a keeper could want: vibrant colors from spiderling to adult, incredible webbing behavior, a voracious appetite, and a visible nature that makes it an elite display animal.
Key Highlights
-
Trifecta of Color: The GBB is famous for its three-tone adult palette: metallic blue legs, a shimmering blue-green (bottle green) cephalothorax, and a bright orange/red abdomen.
-
The Master Weaver: They are arguably the most prolific webbers in the terrestrial world. A GBB will quickly transform its entire enclosure into a complex, “alien” landscape of heavy, stark-white silk tunnels and platforms.
-
Fascinating Ontogeny: Their color transformation is one of the most dramatic in the hobby. Slings start with a “tiger-stripe” gold and black pattern, slowly transitioning through various shades of pink and orange before reaching their iconic adult blue.
-
Always on Display: Unlike many species that hide in burrows, the GBB prefers to sit out on its webbing “throne.” This makes them excellent for those who actually want to see their tarantula throughout the day.
